The Seven-Day Kick-Start Plan How many times have you made New Years Resolutions, only to break them by the end of the first week in January? Weve all been there! The Seven Day Kick-Start Plan will show you how to set yourself goals at any time of the year that you will not break. Why? Well, first of all, you are going to set a goal that you actually WANT to keep, not one that you think you should be keeping. Secondly, Im going to take you through the art of finer goal setting and goal getting, and you will follow a step-by-step plan over seven days. DAY ONE Today is preparation day Buy yourself a special notebook and pen to write your dreams and goals in. Make a commitment to set aside some time each day to work on your goal. What will it take to give you this time? Perhaps you will need to get up five minutes earlier in the morning, or perhaps you want to put aside time in your lunch hour? Maybe you could put block out the time in your diary or set a reminder on your PDA. I know you may not be able to spend time EVERY day on your goal, but I want you to be positive about the time you will commit, and make that promise to yourself. If you miss a day, make sure you set aside some time the next day, or you risk losing momentum and enthusiasm. Now, lets get some clarity, by deciding what you DONT want. Make this list as long as you want; just keep writing everything that comes into your head, and think of every single aspect of your life. Heres a few to give you an idea.. I dont want to struggle for money I dont want to live without fun I dont want to get divorced I dont want to be friends with people who sap my energy I dont want to worry about things I dont want my house to look messy I dont want to live without spirituality Now leave this list and let your subconscious work on it overnight; tomorrow we will clarify what you DO want! DAY TWO Todays the day you will decide on the goal that you are going to achieve. Think of a goal in terms of a dream with a time and date attached, and think big and beautiful dreams. I want you to decide on just one New Years Resolution. If you try to make lots of New Years Resolutions, then most will inevitably fall by the wayside. Instead, decide on one big, shiny goal that you really want to achieve (remember its your dream with a date and time!). You can make another resolution once youve achieved this one, but lets take it just one step at a time. I want you to achieve 100% success on one goal, rather than 25% success on four! First of all, write your goal in your special book. Next, read the guidelines below: Rules for writing your goal: Make it positive and state it as a will rather than a want Avoid energy-depleting words. You are not allowed to put the following words in your goal statement should, not, lose, no, Make sure that this is a goal that you have control over. For example, you dont have control over anyone else in life, but you do have control over actions you take towards achieving something. So you have control over decluttering your home, over achieving your ideal weight, over managing your time. But you dont have control over anybody elses life, winning the lottery, or Robbie Williams discovering that you are his one true love! Which brings me nicely onto the next rule. Make the goal REALISTIC! Dont set yourself up for failure by setting a goal that you just cannot achieve unless you cancel the rest of your life. Having said that, your goal should stretch you and challenge you, otherwise you wont bother with working towards it. Put your goal in a timeframe, remembering to make the timeframe realistic. You might need to do some research before deciding on your timescale. For example, if you want to lose weight, do you know what a healthy and realistic daily weight loss would be? If not, do a bit of research so you can formulate your goal to a realistic and workable timescale. Finally, include the reason that you want to achieve the goal in your goal statment. Whats in it for you? A not so great goal statement: I want to have more control of my finances so I have money for a holiday A great goal statement: By 30th August 2004, I will have a budget in place, and will be saving 50 per month towards a weekend break in the Lake District with my partner in September How does your goal read? Do you need to rewrite it, given the rules above? Once you think youve decided on your goal, close your eyes, put yourself in an imaginary time machine and mentally propel yourself to the time when youve achieved it. Ask yourself the following questions: What do I see in the vision of me achieving this goal? (Describe it) How am I feeling now that I have achieved this goal? What are people saying to me about having achieved my goal? How is my life better for having achieved this goal? Is your goal compelling? Is it multicoloured or just black and white? Are you irresistibly drawn to take action towards it? Does it have that yum factor that makes you feel excited about achieving it? If the answers to these questions are not a resounding yes, then go back to day one, and spend some time thinking about what you want from your life. Remember, this is about you, not about what you should do, but what YOU WANT. I want you to make your goal Compelling with a capital C! If this means that you want to change your goal completely, or it just needs some tweaking, then do it! You are not obliged to stay with the first thing you thought of! DAY THREE Two things to do today. First of all, I want you to think about how you are going to reward yourself once youve achieved your goal. Plan your celebration! This is a very important; dont miss it out. Think about what youd like to do once youve achieved your goal. Make it something exciting and desirable. It might be throwing a party, planning a special meal, buying yourself a new outfit, a long walk in the country, an extra bubbly bubble bath - whatever does it for you! Now write down your celebration perhaps you want to share it with your partner or a close friend. Its up to you, but whatever you do, plan that celebration today! Stick it up! The second thing to do is to write your goal statement and your celebration down on some cards and put these cards in strategic places. The idea is to keep your goal in your mind. So you might want to stick the goal statement on your bathroom mirror, fridge door, PC, on the dashboard of your car, in your wallet, or perhaps make a bookmark out of one of the cards to use in a book you are reading. DAY FOUR I bet you are dying to get started on working towards your goal! Todays the day; its time to start some work on your goal! I want you to write down all the steps you can think of to achieve this goal. First of all, brainstorm. This means that you think of everything you could do to achieve this goal. Just let the ideas flow, and dont worry too much at this stage if some of them seem off the wall, or just downright silly. Write them in your special book nobody else need see them! Remember, you are writing down what you COULD do, not necessarily what you WILL do. Here are a few questions that you can use to get your creative brainstorming juices flowing: What would I do if I wasnt afraid of anything? What mundane things do I need to do to move me one step nearer to my goal? What would I do if time or money were no object? What would I advise my best friend to do? What could I try, just as an experiment? There may be some actions that prompt an idea for another action write them down as you think of them. The key today is quantity, not quality, so just keep writing! DAY FIVE Today, were going to add to and then refine your brainstorming list. Answer the following questions and add your answers onto your brainstorming list if you havent covered them already. What do I need to do in order to achieve my goal (thoughts, behaviours, actions)? What do I need to stop doing in order to achieve my goal? What am I doing already that I can continue to do or do more of? Once youve finished brainstorming, and you really really cant think of anything else, look at your list and highlight or tick the actions that you think will take you closer to your goal. DAY SIX Have you heard about the best way to eat an elephant? One chunk at a time! Dont become overwhelmed about what you need to do to achieve your goal. Firstly, draw up a table something like this ActionBaby Steps (the How)Complete By (date)Completed (tick)Do x 1. 2. 3. etcStop doing y1. 2. 3. etcDo more of z1. 2. 3. etc Todays the day to start organising those actions so that you dont miss any of them. With your list in front of you, break each action into tiny chunks, or baby steps. A baby step can be as tiny as you want. It could be looking something up in the phone book, making a telephone call, buying a piece of equipment, talking to someone for advice. If an action makes you think I dont know where to start, then break it down into its tiniest chunks. You will notice that there is a column in this table to insert a date. When doing this, use your diary, and for each action you put in the table, put the same action in your diary at a time when you know you can do it. This is a tried and tested time management technique, and works much better than endless to do lists. Some actions may be ongoing, in which case you need to keep referring to your action table. Keep it in a place where you can refer to it every day; ideally stick it up on a wall where can refer to it every day. You will get tremendous satisfaction from ticking things off! DAY SEVEN Today, I want you to choose your Superstar Support Team. Choose between three and five people who can help you stay on track, keep motivated, give you a kick when you need it, celebrate with you once youve achieved your goal, or just be there when you need some ideas or a listening ear. Make a note of who you are going to ask, and give them a call or drop them an email NOW! Once youve recruited your superstar support team, make sure that you contact them on a regular basis, but at least once per week. One idea that works well and keeps you accountable could be to produce a weekly report on progress towards your goal. You could do a summary of your week, what youve achieved, what youve found difficult, where you need support and how much further you have to go. Now theres nothing stopping you from achieving your goal. If you feel yourself wavering, remind yourself of Your vision how will life be better once youve achieved this goal? Your celebration keep planning that special celebration once youve achieved your goal Your action plan what one baby step can you take right now to get you one step further towards your goal? This concludes your seven-day 7 Day Kick Start Plan. I hope youve enjoyed it. Id love to hear how youre getting on, and how you have used the 7 Day Kick Start Plan. Do let me know all about your goals and dreams, whether youre stuck and need some words of support, or whether you want to share a success; Im delighted to hear from you.
